Select Plant Hire is currently undertaking a trial of a new Renewable Energy Viewing Deck at our Wincham Depot, exploring how on-site renewable energy generation systems can be integrated effectively with modular accommodation.

The trial focuses on a single prototype installation, designed to generate real-world performance data on renewable performance, operational behaviour and future scalability. By trialling the system in an operational depot environment, we are able to evaluate performance in fully exposed, real-world conditions rather than relying on solely theoretical modelling.

The Renewable Energy Viewing Deck combines solar generation with three different micro-wind turbine technologies; all mounted on the same frame. This allows technologies to be assessed side-by-side under identical environmental conditions, providing a clear comparison of performance and behaviour across varying weather patterns.

Designed with modularity in mind, the deck is fabricated using our inhouse Specialist Fabrication workshop, accredited to BS EN 1090 EXC3, and designed to be lifted into position on site. This design enables re-deployment as modular accommodation set ups are re-mobilised across new projects.

Early monitoring shows that solar output aligns with expected UK seasonal performance, delivering consistent daytime generation. The micro-wind turbines have also demonstrated steady electrical output across variable wind conditions, including overnight, reinforcing the value of a blended renewable approach. All energy generated to date has been consumed on site, directly reducing reliance on grid electricity.

Beyond energy generation, the trial also supports Select’s wider sustainability ambitions. The visible use of renewable technology demonstrates practical action towards carbon reduction and provides an opportunity for developing in-house innovation and modular solutions compatible with our existing modular accommodation offering. We look forward to sharing more as the trial progresses.

“The trial is about understanding how renewable technologies can be integrated with modular buildings in a way that is practical, repeatable and informed by real-world data. It allows us to explore what works today while shaping how future solutions can be developed.”

“Running the trial at our Wincham Depot enables us to assess system performance under real operating conditions. Side-by-side testing provides valuable insight into how different technologies perform over time, which is critical when evaluating scalability and long-term viability. This demonstrates our commitment to support our clients in offering sustainable products.”
