Our operatives are all trained to pass the CSCS cards for health and safety on a construction site, with many going on to achieve gold and platinum standard competency cards. All Select staff also have individual training files, in order to ensure that they are taken through the highest quality internal or external training for their particular responsibility.
The Leadership Team
Alan Gaskin, General Manager:
Alan joined Laing O’Rourke in 2017 as general manager of its Select Plant Hire business unit.
Previously, Alan spent over 12 years with the Terex Corporation in a variety of operations positions – starting with the Powerscreen business in Ireland before moving to the MPS crushing and screening group, and finally serving as vice-president of global operations for the Demag gantry crane business in Dusseldorf, Germany. Alan has an extensive background in business improvement through the application of lean methodologies to customer delivery and satisfaction.
Alan began his engineering career with the Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 13 years, initially as a process engineer before progressing to engineering and management roles in R&D, quality and production across a number of Ford European locations.
Mark Herlihy, Business Stream Leader, Lifting Solutions:
Mark was appointed to lead the Lifting Solutions business stream in 2014, having joined Select in 2005 and held commercial and operational roles across various product ranges working in both the UK and Australia hubs. Applying the broad range of experience gained, Mark now heads a team providing industry-leading crane and lifting solutions to the biggest and most iconic projects.
Edward Carr, Work Winning Leader:
Edward joined Select in 2014 and is responsible for work winning within Select Lifting Solutions, including hire and sales. He has over 20 years’ experience within the lifting industry and has held senior management roles in both the operational and commercial functions.
Stewart Allister, Test and Inspection Manager:
Stewart joined Select in 2014. He has a specific remit to provide guidance and advice on the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER). As a professional senior manager and engineer surveyor, he leads a team of seven engineers and two managerial staff providing thorough examination and load testing services to the plant hire industry and construction sites.
Tracey Hazel, Business Assurance Leader:
Tracey has worked in the plant hire industry for 34 years, starting on a hire desk and going on to manage 64 individual depots for a national plant hire company. Since subsequently joining Laing O’Rourke, she has held various roles including safety, new product development, business assurance and depot management.
Tom Grant, Business Stream Leader Site Solutions:
Tom has worked with Select for over ten years in commercial and operational lead roles across the UK and Australia. With direct delivery experience on some of the world’s largest infrastructure projects, and in some of the most demanding environments, he now leads a team to support Select’s increasing involvement in preconstruction and infrastructure projects across the UK.
Ryan Caldwell, Work Winning Leader, Site Solutions:
Ryan has worked in the accommodation sector for over a decade with Select, adding value particularly in the design stage, manufacture and onsite assembly of some of the largest temporary office and welfare set-ups in the country. From complex logistics through to facilities management, Ryan has led our Site Solutions business to offer a value-adding solution that helps projects attract and retain the best people through providing comfortable, grade A site facilities.
