Under new legislation recently announced by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, all construction plant over 10 years old will be banned from the capital in a bid to improve air quality. Any equipment over this timeline will need to be replaced or retrofitted to meet stringent new standards covering both particulates and nitrogen oxides, with a view to cutting emissions by up to 40% by 2020.
Select, one of the UK’s largest construction and building services suppliers, and part of the Laing O’Rourke group, already outperforms the current minimum standards on many urban projects, such as Crossrail in London. Continued investment throughout the recession has resulted in a young and modern fleet, with high environmental credentials. Select was the first UK operator of emission compliant piling rigs such as the Bauer BG 30 and innovative BG-24H, and continues to specify new equipment to the highest emissions specifications available.
“The Mayor’s latest initiative won’t just be a breath of fresh air to the industry, it will help increase efficiency too” said Dan Thompson, Select ‘s heavy plant leader. “Eliminating the oldest and most polluting equipment will help clear the air for London, but the newer machinery is more efficient in operation and in many cases quieter too. Select’s average heavy plant age profile is under three years old, and a substantial number of these units already comply with the Tier 3b emissions standard. We have invested over £70m in the past three years in the ‘greenest’ technology available in each of Select’s product lines including Heavy Plant, Cranes and Logistics. Ongoing investment means we’re continuing to replace the remainder of our fleet as required, so that we can offer our clients the biggest choice possible, wherever they’re needed.”
Select’s heavy plant fleet includes excavators, piling rigs, dumpers, telehandlers, rollers, static pumps, tractors, dozers, dump trucks, mobile and crawler cranes. New large goods vehicles (LGVs) and substantial investment in world class tower cranes are helping Select to achieve a dominant position in the resurgent UK construction industry, all matched by extensive professional resources and aftercare.
